Deaf family fun day brings together the Deaf and hearing community

On the 12th of May, at the end of Deaf Awareness Week, the South Hampshire Deaf Children’s Society organised a community event bringing together the Deaf and hearing community.

The event saw over 750 attendees, 15 stalls, inflataplanet and an impressive display including two fire engines, a police van, and an ambulance. The event saw attendance from The Deaf Chef, famous characters from Frozen and Mickey Mouse, as well as the fantastic Newlands School Signing Choir.

Under the warm sun, families, friends, and supporters converged to participate in a day of activities and interaction. The event’s focus on fostering inclusivity for the Deaf community while welcoming all and raising awareness to the hearing community was evident in its diverse offerings and engaging displays.

The fundraising efforts on the day were commendable, with over £1,500 raised for the South Hampshire Deaf Children’s Society. This financial support underscores the community’s support and the positive role that the charity is having providing friendship and support for Deaf children and their families.

The Society’s Chair, Laura Morgan said:

“I was simply bowled over by how well the day went. Fantastic fun was had by all and the signed choir went down a storm – it was great to so many spectators trying to sign along.

“That’s exactly why we have important events like this. They really help break down the barriers that seperate Deaf and hearing people and demonstrate that it’s really easy to be more Deaf aware and just learning a few basic signs can really make all the difference.”

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone that was part of the event, the community for coming and all the businesses that donated prizes. We already can’t wait for next year’s to be event bigger.”
